Massage cushion: shiatsu, heated or spiked, which one to choose?

Four families of cushions, four different uses. How to choose according to where you actually plan to use it.

Coussin massant posé contre le dossier d'un fauteuil

At first glance, all massage cushions look alike: a block of faux leather, a strap, a plug. In use, however, they have little in common. The deciding factor is not the number of nodes announced on the product page, it is where you plan to use it.

The four families

The shiatsu cushion with rotating nodes

Rotating heads turn under a cover and knead the area deeply. It is the most “massage-like” of the four, often with a heating function. Compact, it wedges between the backrest and the back, or under the neck.

For whom: the neck, upper back, shoulders. Watch out for: on a slim person or a hard chair, the pressure can be strong — a folded towel between the cushion and the back solves the problem.

The massaging seat back

Same principle, but over the full height of the back, with heads that travel up and down along the spine. It straps onto an armchair or an office chair.

For whom: those who want to work the whole back and have a dedicated chair. Watch out for: it is bulky and does not move easily from room to room.

The heated cushion

No mechanics: only a heating element, often with several temperature levels and an automatic shut-off. It is the simplest, the quietest and the least expensive.

For whom: a quiet end of day, a stiff neck, a wish for warmth without vibration. Watch out for: never fall asleep on it if the model has no automatic shut-off.

The massage mat

A mat to unroll on the floor or on the bed, with vibrating zones spread along its length. You lie on it, which distributes body weight and removes any point pressure.

For whom: the whole body, lying down. Watch out for: you need room to lie down — this is not an office product.

The criteria that really matter

  • Power supply. Mains, car socket or battery? A cushion meant for the car must come with the 12 V adapter, otherwise it will stay in the living room.
  • Automatic shut-off. Almost essential as soon as there is heat. Most models switch off after 15 or 20 minutes.
  • Removable cover. A cushion that can be washed lasts longer, especially if used after sport.
  • Noise level. Node mechanisms all make noise. Not a problem alone in front of the TV, it is in an open-plan office.
  • Rotation direction. Good models alternate automatically every minute: the massage stays balanced on both sides.

How long per session?

Fifteen to twenty minutes are enough, once or twice a day at most. Beyond that, the skin heats up and the feeling becomes unpleasant rather than relaxing. Always start at the lowest intensity: with this type of device you can always go up, rarely back down once the area is sensitised.

Usage contraindications

Avoid mechanical massage on an inflamed, swollen or injured area, on a wound, and directly on the spine. In case of pregnancy, circulatory disorders, implanted devices or persistent pain, seek advice from a healthcare professional before use.
