Compression stockings: understanding graduated support
A compression stocking applies stronger pressure at the ankle, which decreases as it moves up towards the calf and thigh. It is this gradient, called graduated, that supports the return of blood towards the upper body. The principle is the same for a stocking worn after sport and for one worn when travelling.
When to wear them
The most common situations are long periods standing or sitting, journeys by plane or car, and the period following prolonged exercise. You put them on in the morning, legs still rested, and take them off in the evening.
Height and size
The mid-thigh model goes higher than a model that stops below the knee. The choice is made by ankle and calf circumference, not by shoe size: a size too small forms a tourniquet at the knee, a size too large no longer compresses anything. The measurements given on each product page are the reference, as is the variant actually available.
Care and precautions
Wash at thirty degrees, air dry, no fabric softener or tumble dryer: the elastic fibre loses its tension with heat. Expect regular replacement, as compression wears out. Our items are comfort and recovery products. In case of venous insufficiency, diabetes or arterial disorders, the compression class must be chosen with a healthcare professional.
