Knee support, strap or brace: which one to choose

The choice depends on the level of support you are looking for and the freedom of movement you need. A simple compression knee support, in elastic mesh, is worn under trousers or shorts during exercise: it warms the joint and gives a proprioceptive cue. A patellar strap, thinner, focuses on the tendon below the kneecap. A brace with side reinforcements adds hinged stays on the sides to limit twisting movements.

Running, pivot sports, gym

For running, lightness and breathability come first. In pivot sports such as basketball, football or handball, side reinforcements make full sense. In the gym, a compression knee support is usually enough, except for heavy movements.

Positioning it properly

The silicone pad, when there is one, must surround the kneecap without pressing on it. The knee support is put on with the leg slightly bent, then you check that it does not slip after a few flexions. If it marks the skin or cuts off circulation at the calf, it is too tight or too small.

Finding your size

The reference measurement is the thigh circumference fifteen centimetres above the kneecap, sometimes completed by the knee circumference; each product page gives the corresponding range. These are support and comfort items, not medical devices: after a sprain or in case of pain that lasts, consult a healthcare professional.
