Wrist or thumb brace: soft or rigid?
Not all hand braces serve the same purpose. A soft brace, in neoprene or elastic mesh, compresses and warms the wrist while letting the hand work: it is worn during activity. A rigid brace includes a removable metal splint that holds the wrist in a neutral position: it is worn more at rest or at night.
Wrist only or wrist and thumb
Models that include the thumb add a side channel and lock the thumb column in addition to the wrist. This is a much more restrictive support, to be reserved for times when gripping needs to be limited.
Side and size
Most of these braces are designed for a specific hand, left or right. The side actually available is indicated on each product page, as is the wrist circumference range. A brace that is too tight makes the fingers turn white or the hand tingle: loosen the straps or go up a size.
How to wear it
Start with short periods, away from movements requiring strength. The metal splint is removed for hand washing of the fabric. These are support and comfort items, not medical devices: after a fall, in case of numbness or pain that lasts, consult a healthcare professional.
