Choosing the right compression boots
Compression boots, also known as pressotherapy boots, wrap the leg from the foot to the thigh. Air chambers inflate one after the other, from the bottom up, then release. The movement follows the principle of the natural pumping action of the muscles while walking, except that you are sitting or lying down. A session generally lasts twenty minutes, after sport or at the end of the day.
How many air chambers?
Six-chamber models cover the foot, calf and thigh in large zones. Eight-chamber models divide the path more finely, which makes the progression of the compression more gradual. In use, the difference is mainly about sensation: the more chambers there are, the smoother the wave.
Wired or wireless?
A wired model connects the boots to a control unit placed on the floor: it is the simplest and cheapest option, suited to home use always in the same place. A wireless model integrates the pump and battery into the boot itself: you can stand up, move around, take it with you when travelling or to the club. Some are controlled from a mobile app, which lets you save your settings.
Modes and intensities
Devices generally offer three families of programmes: a sequential compression that rises from the foot to the thigh, a kneading mode that alternates zones, and a relaxation mode with low, continuous pressure. Intensity is adjusted independently. The useful habit: start low, increase gradually, and stop as soon as the sensation becomes uncomfortable.
When to use them
Most often after exercise, when the legs feel heavy and the calves saturated; or at the end of the day after long hours standing or sitting. Twenty minutes is enough for most users. There is no need for a daily session: two or three times a week is a common rhythm.
Care
The inside of the boots is cleaned with a damp sponge, without immersion or machine washing. Store them flat or rolled up in their bag, hoses disconnected, to avoid marking the seams.
Which size and which precautions?
Most models adjust with a zip and straps and cover a wide range of thigh and calf circumferences; check the measurements given on each product page. Always start at the lowest intensity to get used to the sensation. These devices are comfort and recovery products, not medical devices: in case of venous disorders, known thrombosis, pregnancy or persistent pain, seek advice from a healthcare professional before use.
